A Complete Spaceloft Aerogel Internal Install

Our customers Matt and his wife Debbie, own a 1930s three bedroom mid terrace property in the Midlands. When they wanted to insulate two upstairs rooms they turned to Enviroform Solutions for materials and for our advice on installation. We were happy to help. The end result is a superb example of a Spaceloft Aerogel installation.

Our foiled Spaceloft® Aerogel panels are supplied in 600mm x 1450mm sizes and start from 10mm thickness up to a maximum of 40mm. The panels provide a highly efficient vapour and airtight insulation layer with 10mm saving 62% heat loss right up to 40mm saving 89% heat loss.

Now, having completed insulating the two rooms in their property with 10mm Spaceloft® Insulation, Matt supplied us with photographs as the project progressed.  They have followed the installation guide we provided to the letter, and the results are pretty impressive given they are DIY renovators and have never done this before. No more waking up or coming home to a cold room. And to make things even better, as non-specialists, Matt told us how rewarding they found the experience of completing the work themselves, “It took a while to cut everything to size but it was a satisfying process.”

Spaceloft Aerogel Application

The panels are simply cut to size and adhered to the wall with Tec 7 (or similar approved adhesive).

All the joints between the panels are taped with foil tape which comes provided and all the perimeter junctions of the room – wall, floor, ceiling, windows – are taped using a high grab air barrier tape similar to Alpha Power Tape.

Spaceloft Aerogel Panels Installation Procedure

Step 1         To start, make sure all walls and window/door reveals are clear of debris and mould.

Step 2         Before installing the Insulation Panels, tape all floor, wall and ceiling junctions with air barrier tape. Also tape the junction between the window frame and the reveal and in doing this you will ensure that the wall junctions are made airtight

Step 3         Starting at the bottom left ( or right ) hand corner start adhering the Spaceloft® Panels to the wall with the adhesive.

Step 4         When it comes to the last panel on first row – measure the distance and then cut the panel by adding pressure on the blanket with a flat straight edge and, using a sharp Stanley knife, cut across the blanket. The offcut is then used as the first panel on the second row which creates a “Brick Pattern” of Spaceloft® panels.

Step 5         For window and door openings, cut panels around window openings making sure the edge of the panels overhang the edge of the reveals. This allows you to insert a 10mm cut piece of blanket into this space which will prevent any thermal bridging at this junction.

Step 6         Once all the panels are adhered to the wall and the reveals insulated, tape all of the joints between the panels with the foil tape including all the wall, ceiling, floor and reveal junctions ( already done with airtight tape ).

Step 6         Using the thermally broken fixings provided, fix the plasterboard through the insulation layer into the wall.

Step 7         Dryline or skim and finish.
